Police
vehicle equipment is a big part of any department’s budget. Police
vehicles are used to transport, patrolling and detaining. Most police
vehicles are four door sedans that have been upgraded from the standard
models.
The added improvements begin with the engine, which is larger and tuned
better than the same model available to the public. The wheels and brakes
are often of higher quality as well, and the frame is stiffened for
greater performance and handling. These allow police cars to perform
at a higher level than most cars, giving them an advantage when pursuing
criminals. The interior often lacks the luxury amenities that the civilian
model has, but has multiple connections for police radios, computers,
and displays. Gun racks can be easily installed, and there is usually
a protective barrier between the front and back seats, protecting police
while transporting dangerous criminals.
The most important piece of police vehicle equipment is the two-radio,
or similar communication device. Having phones available to most people
has allowed police to respond to calls much more quickly. Calls are
received at a dispatch station which contains a two-way radio. The dispatch
officer locates the nearest officer or multiple officers and communicates
with them through the radio telling them where to go and what to expect.
Most police radios are encrypted for security reasons. Computers with
network connections have also began appearing in patrol cars, allowing
officers to search for criminal records, and traffic violations at the
scene.
Some police vehicles are designed with increased protection and armaments
for very dangerous situations. SWAT vehicles are often military vehicles
that have been adapted to suit dangerous urban situations, or surveillance
vehicles that are in descript, but contain many listening and viewing
devices for undercover operations and gathering evidence for high-profile
crimes. These cars and vans have multiple brackets and consoles for
sophisticated tracking equipment. While the second version almost never
see’s battle, the armored version is designed to take a beating
by the most well organized and powerful criminals. Heavy armored plating,
strong engines and heavily trained SWAT officers inside the vehicle
provide a formidable force, strong enough to take on military units
if necessary. The supplies in these vehicles are minimal, force and
firepower being the main purpose for using them. Extra room is devoted
to guns and ammo.
Other vehicles used by police are motorcycles. There are various mounts
that can be attached to them, allowing the same connectivity as a patrol
car but in a much more maneuverable vehicle, the only disadvantage being
the inability to transport criminals.
In police cars and vans, partitions are used to protect the officer,
or officers from being attacked from behind while transporting criminals.
They are often made of strong metal bars with a thick layer of shatter
resistant plexi-glass. Often windows will be protected as well to prevent
escape. Some larger vehicles are designed solely for transportation
of prisoners, with attachments on the floor to chain people down, and
separate compartments for police and drivers. These are often armored
or protected by other patrol cars when transporting violent criminals,
and often have GPS locators in them in case of hijacking. Police vehicle
equipment is a complement to the equipment the officer already carries,
allowing for greater connectivity and increased firepower when necessary.
