Police
motorcycle equipment is available both for consumers and police officers-although
the selection for consumers is more limited. This site is intended only
to provide information and does not endorse any products or methods.
Anyone who uses police motorcycle equipment should be properly trained
to do so.
Police motorcycles are employed by police departments to allow officers
greater maneuverability than they might have with police cars. Also,
motorcycles give officers more speed to respond to an accident than
a police bicycle would. A police officer with a motorcycle (often called
just a motor in the United States) can navigate through crowded streets
and even through the scene of the car accident or traffic collision.
Police motorcycles in North America are typically built specifically
for the use of patrolling the streets. Manufacturers include Harley-Davidson,
Honda, BMW etc. Consumers can purchase used police motorcycles once
they are retired. For the consumer this can be a way of respecting law
officers or simply having the thrill of owning a motor.
In America, police motorcycles became most famous when the TV show
CHiPs gained popularity in the 1970s. The show featured two crime-fighting
cops on the beat who fought crime by employing police motorcycle equipment.
Today, Hollywood does not glamorize police motorcycles anymore, but
police departments regularly incorporate them into daily operation.
After purchasing a fleet of motorcycles, the police department must
outfit the motors with taxpayers' money and purchase police motorcycle
equipment. While police motorcycles cannot carry as much equipment as
a squad car they still must have some of the following crime-fighting
essentials:
• A microphone – this allows an officer to amplify the
voice and give directions or orders to an individual or crowd. A microphone
can be mounted to a helmet so that the officer has both hands free for
steering.
• Sirens – sirens signal to other drivers that a police
motorcycle is approaching. They usually flash red and blue in the United
States.
• Siren amplifiers – police employ audio warnings to alert
the public of their presence. A police motorcycle requires a siren amplifier
to increase the signal of the siren.
• Boxes – boxes are another name for storage units that
sit on the rear of the motorcycle. Police require equipment such as
batons, tasers, and handcuffs that they cannot always carry while driving.
A box is a convenient place to store police motorcycle equipment.
Police departments also purchase accessories for officers deployed
on motorcycles. Some accessories include:
• A leather jacket – a jacket is important because it provides
a visual signal to the public that a police officer is in their presence.
In addition, in case of an accident, leather can protect the skin from
scrapes. Some officers also wear leather breeches.
• A helmet – like a jacket, a helmet lets citizens know
that they are near an officer. However, the helmet's primary function
is to protect the officer in case of an accident. A helmet can be a
life-saving device and can be the difference between major brain trauma
and minor injury in case an officer loses control of the motorcycle.
Other pieces of police accessories that can be purchased include rain
gear and radar guns. These are carried by police officers based on their
assignment for the day and conditions of the road.
