Traffic
control is the way officers make the road safe for drivers. When someone
is speeding, they’re putting themselves and others at risk for
injury and death. To combat speeders, officers use police lidar equipment
to detect how fast a vehicle is traveling.
Police lidar equipment applies to radar guns; “lidar” stands
for “light detection and ranging.” It works by sending a
light pulse out; then it measures the amount of time it takes for that
pulse to be reflected, much like radar. The interval can determine how
fast a vehicle is traveling.
Some companies claim to sell products that can fool police lidar equipment.
Veil, for example, is a company that sells a coating that will scatter
the pulses from the equipment, thereby producing a false/incorrect reading.
Newer radar guns, however, are more sophisticated and harder to fool.
