After a devastating terrorist attack in Mumbai in December 2009 the hotels that were targeted reopened later that month to make a statement against the terrorists. A police dog is specifically trained to aid in law enforcement. They are often called K9 which is short for the word canine. In Hollywood German shepherds are often pictured for dramatic effect, but in real life Beagles are often used in airports because they are friendly and do not alarm passengers. There are associations and networks such as the California Narcotic Canine Association that allow officers to share information about illicit substances dogs.

• Cadaver dogs – a dog's sense of smell is many times greater than a person's. Because of this, dogs are trained to detect the smell of decomposing bodies for forensic investigations.

The cost of training a police dog is expensive, and so if one is shot on the scene of a crime it represents an economic loss. Therefore, it is important to outfit some dogs with police K9 equipment such as a bulletproof vest.

Dogs form emotional bonds with the people they work with. To symbolize their status many are given police K9 equipment such as police badges and IDs.

• Sedan and SUV transport units – these allow the dog to ride in the car and gain quick exit if they need to chase after a suspect.

• A leg sleeve – this is used to train the dog to bite a leg of a suspect. The trainer wears this in order to be protected while directing the dog.

• An arm sleeve – like a leg sleeve, this piece of equipment is used for training. The trainer wears this to be protected while the dog is taught how to attack.
