Police equipment FAQs

I am starting out my career as a security guard. What kind of equipment do I need?

It is rare that security guards will carry guns, so you can cross those off the list. There are, however, other items that are very important to have. Because you most likely will not have a gun, you may want to make sure that you either have a stun gun or pepper spray that you can use if the situation warrants it. Also, having the typical equipment like batons and heavy duty flashlights are also important items to have if you will be working as a security guard.

Do I need to be a college graduate to be a police officer?

No. In fact, many police officers are not college graduates. This does not mean, however, that you do not need to be knowledgeable. Depending on what kind of an officer you want to be, you will likely need to go through some very extensive training before you can call yourself a police officer. Some agencies require you to complete a police academy, while other agencies also require you to complete a localized training as well. Do not think that becoming a police officer is an easy way to get out of studying. There is much that an officer needs to know and retain.

I want to buy a gun like the police have. Where can I find one?

Although the police department does not have a monopoly on guns, the fact is that if you want to legally buy guns, you are going to need to go through a process. First of all, you will need to apply for and receive a concealed weapons permit. Once this permit is obtained, you can go to a gun store to buy a gun, but most states require a waiting period before the gun can be issued. During this waiting period, your background and personal history are checked. As long as your background check goes well, you can get a gun soon thereafter.
