The
most widely used piece of Oregon police car equipment is the radar gun
which is used to measure the speed of a vehicle. They work by sending
out a Doppler radar signal to a moving vehicle. The vehicle reflects
the radar back to the gun where a simple mathematical formula is performed
inside the gun accurately displaying the speed of the vehicle targeted,
whether or not the receiving radar gun is in motion as well or not.
Sirens and lights are standard Oregon police car equipment, although
some undercover cars have them hidden in the engine grill, or high inside
the back window. Often the antennas on these cars are hidden as well
making them appear like regular civilian models instead of cop cars.
This is mostly used for traffic police, as it has been proven that people
will slow down in the presence of a marked police vehicle, then continue
speeding when the car is gone. There is no standard siren sound, but
often multiple sounds are cycled through to prevent accidents when multiple
emergency vehicles are approaching the same area, and to help unaware
motorists notice.
In-car video systems are now a required piece of Oregon police car equipment.
An in-car video system records everything that happen outside the front
window of a patrol car and has been invaluable in resolving disputes
over police actions. A camera cannot lie, so it provides an excellent
tool for prosecutors and defense attorneys alike, and protects both
police officers and civilians. Drunkenness and dangerous driving can
be shown on camera taking the doubt out of personal testimony.
