Like
any other police department, the LAPD has a wide variety of tools that
are used for any number of functions. The officer in the field carries
many tools on their person at all times. These items can include a firearm,
non-lethal weapons like pepper spray and tasers, handcuffs and numerous
other items necessary for police work.
For officers in support, tools like police radios and computers are
absolutely essential to effective police work. These items are important
L.A. police gear and are used every day to save lives. The police dispatcher
uses these tools to coordinate the officer in the field with any other
agencies needed for the situation; emergency agencies like hospitals
and fire departments being the most common. The dispatcher, using these
tools, is also the officer's lifeline to additional support from other
officers in the field.
Computers have become common tools for police work and part of the standard
repertoire of LA police gear found in every patrol car. Technology has
advanced enough for officers in the field to effectively connect to
departmental computer systems, as well as systems from other agencies.
This has greatly streamlined many of the processes by which law enforcement
is carried out and has made the police department work more efficiently.
Other items of LA police gear include devices designed for surveillance.
These items allow law enforcement officials to detect, observe and record
individuals or groups that are currently under investigation. The use
of these pieces of equipment is restricted due to privacy laws. Investigators
must obtain authorization from a command or staff officer in order to
legally use this type of equipment.
Discretionary items are surveillance devices that are not designed to
be concealed but can be used in that manner. These can include tape
recorders, video recorders, cameras, and night-vision devices. As with
other surveillance equipment, when used in a concealed manner, authorization
must be given before they can be put to work.
The patrol car itself is an essential piece of LA police gear. While
their main function is to allow the officer to cover a wider area, modern
patrol cars have many features that are important to law enforcement.
The onboard computer allows officers to communicate with many different
databases as needed in the performance of their duties.
The patrol car also serves as a means of transporting a suspect once
that person has been arrested. Most patrol cars have a center barrier
that separates the officer from the suspect. These are designed to protect
the officer in the event the arrestee intends to try and inflict injury
upon that officer.
Finally, the patrol car is a storage facility. Law enforcement officials
must be ready for anything while on duty and it would be impossible
to carry all the necessary items on their person. Many items, including
tactical vests, shotguns and ammunition are stored in these vehicles
in the event they are needed.
The tactical vest, or bulletproof vest, has become the most important
item of LA police gear that the officer can wear. In high-crime areas
such as much of Los Angeles, an officer being shot at is not an uncommon
occurrence. These items are the most effective way to protect the officer's
vital organs in the event that they are involved in a shoot-out.
