Fire
police equipment ranges from flares and glowing batons used to direct
traffic, to caution tape and reflective vests. Fire police are volunteer
members of a fire brigade, they may or may not have police powers depending
on the area. They receive special police training and are responsible
for traffic control, scene safety and security, crowd control and station
security when called upon. The primary role of fire police is to assist
at the scene of major incidents, providing operational support.
Fire police equipment can be found at many police and fire fighter supply
stores, many of which are now exclusively online because of the large
amount of specialized and expensive gear that would be difficult to
stock at any one location. Gear is made to order as well, making it
impossible to find in a store. For newer and more high tech police gear,
an authorization form is required before purchasing equipment to ensure
that it is not going into the wrong hands.
Fire police equipment provides rescuers with visibility at dangerous
scenes, allowing traffic to pass with the least amount of trouble, in
a safe manner. Lighted batons and flares are the most used items for
fire police. Electric LED lights are replacing traditional fire flares
because of the heat and added danger of fire flares. Reflective gloves
and vests provide added visibility, and often a mega-phone is necessary
to address large crowds. Caution tape is another useful item in providing
for a safe scene.
